The hapless young man, reprimanded and sacked by his wealthy uncle, is a recurring figure in Agatha Christie's short stories. Here, he is enticed into an adventure with a beautiful socialite who talks of marriage.
It was first published under the title Playing Innocent, which was revised to The Golden Ball for the UK short story collection The Listerdale Mystery in 1934. It become the title story of the US collection The Golden Ball and Other Stories in 1971.
It has never been adapted.
