The title is a Biblical reference from Judges, 5:25, in which Jael confronts Sisera: "He asked water, and she gave him milk: she brought forth butter in a lordly dish." The play was first broadcast on the BBC Radio Light Programme in 1948 and has been performed live on stage as part of an evening of Christie radio plays in the United Kingdom, Australia, the USA and China.
