The story first appeared in a book collection in 1960 in The Adventure of the Christmas Pudding. It was the only story with Miss Marple to feature in the collection. It appeared in the US in the 1961 collection Double Sin and Other Stories.

It was adapted for TV in 2013, as part of the sixth series of Agatha Christie’s Marple. It starred Julia McKenzie as Marple and combined the plot of The Thumb Mark of St Peter with the original narrative.
