Raymond West approaches the Tuesday Night Club after his visit to John Newman, a friend who is searching for the Spanish ship Otranto which was shipwrecked off the coast of Cornwall. When John Newman disappears for days, upon his return he claims that he had been abducted by the thieves who had stripped the Otranto of its gold, and that the local pub landlord had worked with them. Can Miss Marple help the club solve the mystery of the Otranto and its dangerous allure?

It's Raymond West's turn to spin the tale of a crime for the the Tuesday Night Club to solve. When researching one of his novels, he encountered stolen gold and kidnappers. As ever, it is Miss Marple's shrewd observation that reveals the key to the crime.
It was published in the Royal Magazine in the UK in 1928 and in the US later that year, although under the revised title The Solving Six and the Golden Grave. It was included in the 1932 collection, The Thirteen Problems, Miss Marple's first short story collection.
It has never been adapted.
